With the 2027 Oscars documentary race still wide open months before key fall festivals, traders see no dominant frontrunner among early contenders like *Tutu*, *Nuisance Bear*, *American Doctor*, *Musk*, and *Once Upon a Time in Harlem*, all clustered near even odds. Sam Pollard’s Berlinale-premiered portrait of Desmond Tutu and the Sundance-debuted *Nuisance Bear* (expanding the directors’ acclaimed short on polar bear–human tensions in Churchill) have generated early critical notice and historical precedent for festival momentum translating to Academy attention. Alex Gibney’s *Musk* benefits from the director’s track record, while *American Doctor* and *Once Upon a Time in Harlem* draw interest for their timely subjects. Absent major guild nods or breakout reviews so far, the market reflects uncertainty around how upcoming Venice, Telluride, and TIFF screenings plus eventual precursors will separate the pack in this historically unpredictable category.
