The Bank of Japan's July 2026 decision to hold the policy rate at its post-June peak of 1.00%—its highest since 1995—while slightly raising the fiscal 2026 growth forecast to 0.6% has anchored trader expectations for a 25-basis-point hike in October. Persistent upside risks to core inflation, driven by yen weakness and AI-related demand pressures, have reinforced the BoJ's forward guidance on further normalization, with analysts citing potential overshoots above the 2% target. Recent communications emphasize accommodative financial conditions and vigilance against price spikes, supporting the 66.5% implied probability for a modest tightening versus 34.5% for no change. Key near-term catalysts include August CPI data and September policy signals that could refine the rate path.
