Christian Schmidt’s May 2026 resignation triggered the search, but June PIC meetings collapsed amid US support for Italian diplomat Antonio Zanardi Landi versus backing from France, Germany, and the UK for French Balkans envoy René Troccaz. This impasse produced an interim appointment of acting High Representative Louis J. Crishock on 1 July 2026, with his mandate extending only briefly. Trader consensus reflected in current pricing therefore embeds the unresolved diplomatic standoff, institutional preferences among PIC members, and the possibility of further compromise or prolonged acting leadership rather than swift selection.
