Alex Michelsen enters the National Bank Open round-of-64 matchup as the clear favorite against Daniel Merida Aguilar, backed by a superior ranking, deeper Masters 1000 experience, and a straight-sets victory over the Spaniard earlier in 2026 at Indian Wells. Merida Aguilar, a 22-year-old right-hander ranked around No. 63, has shown strong recent form on hard courts with a career-highlight win over Ugo Humbert and consistent results that pushed his peak ranking to the top 60. The hard-court surface at Montreal favors Michelsen’s baseline consistency and serve, though Merida’s aggressive style and improving fitness create upset potential in what projects as a competitive opener. No major injury concerns have emerged for either player heading into the contest.
